Dance:
Brazilian Contemporary

  • Paco Gomes
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

(Receive PE credit for this class)

World-renown choreographer and teacher Paco Gomez blends strength and athleticism with a lyrical grace in a way that inspires everyone, from soccer players to professional dancers, to get up and move! This class will start off traditionally with Afro-Brazilian orixa dances and capoeira (a Brazilian martial art form) and then flow, fall, and leap into contemporary style modern dance. For the final performance students will add their own flavor to the mix creating movement that infuses learned combinations with personal style.

Acting: Scene on Stage

  • Leah Greenberg
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

How does an actor prepare? In this class you will learn what it takes to deliver a truthful, compelling, and entertaining performance. We will learn the methods used in contemporary American theater: vocal and physical training, script analysis, rehearsal, and critique. There will be two final performances: one at the Out of Site Celebration in December and another at Zeum Theater in January at which students will perform short scenes from contemporary plays. By creating a studio environment that's both comfortable and disciplined and a group dynamic based on trust and playfulness this class will give students the tools and confidence required to experience the transformative power of acting.

Design: Architecture & Installation

  • Raffaella Falchi
  • Mellie Katakolos
  • Tuesdays/Thursdays

(Worth 5 units of UC approved art credit)

This class is an introduction to the basic principles of architecture and full-scale building. We will be pushing the boundaries of the creative process, using ordinary materials in innovative ways. Our main project will be designing and building individualized "pods" - a structural representation of each person's identity. For the exhibition we will put the pods together, constructing a large installation that represents our own mini community. We will be working in a professional shop and learning to use power tools and specialized machinery to create our pieces.

The Booth

  • Unity Lewis
  • Ben Flowz
  • Tuesdays/Thursdays

Students in The Booth class will form a collective of musicians and represent the next generation of recording artists. This class aims to sharpen the students' songwriting craft, music/audio production experience, and performance skills. Together we will create a body of work based on our personal experiences and express our diverse cultures, our communities, and our styles through our music. We will address the topic of individual and community representation. We will perform our original songs live at the Out of Site Celebration, where we will be releasing our professional-quality CD, communicating our message of community building through art.

Black & White Photography

  • Emilio Bañuelos
  • Tuesdays/Thursdays

This class is full. We will be offering it again in the Winter.
