Afro-Brazilian Drumming

  • Alfie Macias
  • Tuesday/Thursday

Have you ever been to Carnaval in San Francisco? The drummers that roll deep in the parade through the streets of the Mission are part of a group called a bateria (Portugeuse for drums). Baterias are an important part of Samba schools in Brazil. They have been formed by youth and adults alike throughout Latin America. Come and learn about these drum rhythms from Brazil that have inspired music all over the world. Join an ensemble and learn how to perform as a group. You will gain important skills in playing music, performing, and creating your own rhythms.

Architecture

  • Raffaella Falchi
  • Tuesday/Thursday

What if you could design your home, school or a youth center? What would be important to you? What would your design look like? Architects shape our world, and in this class you will learn the questions and ideas they consider, what inspires them and the skills and tools they use to create the buildings and spaces we enjoy. We will be visiting galleries and architects offices for inspiration and fact-finding and then returning to the studio for drawing and model building. Take the opportunity to design and build your own vision and ideal spaces hands-on. After this class, you will never look at your home, school or the city in the same way. Your designs will be exhibited at the Out of Site semester celebration at SOMArts.

Mural Painting

  • Benjamin Miller-Rios
  • Susie Lundy
  • Tuesdays/Thursdays

Murals can tell personal stories and unite diverse communities. They have served as an alternate form of media accessible to the average every day person. Murals have been used to educate people about history and identities. In this class you will learn the steps in making a mural from start to finish. Be ready to learn more about drawing painting, using color, and designing. Understand what it means to work collaboratively in a mural crew and be part of a larger community.

Dance: West African and Bhangra

  • Joti Singh
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

From Jay-Z to Missy Elliot, one can hear traces of Bhangra music in hip-hop, jungle, and house music.  West African dance is one of the many foundations of hip hop dance in the United States.  Together they make a fresh and live dance class.  If you like to dance and sweat, then this class is for you. (Or if you need P.E. credits at school!) You will learn how traditional Punjabi moves are being remixed with hip hop choreography to create a new dance form. You will also learn the connections between traditional West African dance and the moves you see on videos on BET and MTV.  The class will culminate in a performance at the Out of Site Final Celebration in December.

Guerilla Poetry: H.E.A.T

  • Myron Michael Hardy
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

Here Everywhere And There! Guerilla Poetry is like Batman in DARK KNIGHT! You've seen this movie, yes? How else to PUT IT? It's like the sun. How else to PLACE IT? It appears any and everywhere you like. it is ALL OVER THE PLACE. This guerrilla poetry and performance workshop takes it a step further by moving from the stage to public spaces. In this class you will learn to express yourself so that your voice can be heard in the community and on the page. We will use words as paint, paper as canvases, and the world as a stage.  Learn how to make your words explode on a page, publish your own work, and bust your poetry in public. In the spirit of Amiri Baraka, Sekou Sundiata, Sarah Jones, and many more. Let your voice be heard!

Black and White Photography

  • Kira Shemano
  • Tuesdays 4 - 6 pm
  • Saturdays 3 - 7 pm

Photography changes the way the world works. With a combination of technical skills and artistic vision this power is in your hands. In this class you will sharpen your camera and darkroom skills (including processing your own film!) and learn about the critical issues that photographers consider when making fine art prints. One of your assignments will be to create an environmental portrait. How can photography help us explore personal space and public space? It's your chance to capture the essence of someone you have never met before through film. You will learn how to critique and edit your own work culminating in an end-of the semester photo exhibit. This class includes mandatory weekly Saturday sessions at Rayko Photography Center on Third Street, where you will be learning to use the darkroom and processing your own film.
