Painting:
Street & Studio

  • Ana Fernandez
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

Use aerosol and acrylics to dialogue with your community. Painting is a visual language that can include words, figures, abstractions, and colors to represent what you see, feel and believe. In this class you will be in the studio and out on the street developing the technical skills necessary to find your own creative style and make your mark. Our final project will involve painting and spraying in a public space.

Black and White Photography

  • Kija Lewis
  • Emilio Bañuelos
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

In this class you will learn the technical aspects of using a manual camera in order to transform the raw material of what you see everyday into artistic images. How can photography help us explore personal space and public space? We will experiment stylistically: staging installations and documenting existing realities. Plus we will make prints in a professional darkroom. Cameras provided.

Dance Lab

  • Jacinta Vlach
  • Angeline Young
  • Tuesdays/Thursdays

In this hip hop dance class you will train your body to move athletically and gracefully by combining classical, modern and jazz warm-ups with contemporary choreography. You will learn dance combinations from the teachers' extensive repertoires that they have developed over many years of dancing professionally. Plus you will learn the process of choreographing, composing, and staging your own dances. The class will culminate with a public performance.

Architecture

  • Raffaella Falchi
  • Wenn Murphy
  • Tuesdays/Thursdays

What if you could design your home, your school, a restaurant or a movie theater? What would be important to you? What would your design look like? Architects shape our world, and in this class you will learn the questions and ideas they consider, what inspires them and the skills and tools they use to create the buildings and spaces we enjoy. We will be visiting galleries and architects offices for inspiration and fact-finding and then returning to the studio for drawing and model building. In this class you will experience hands-on building. After this class, you will never look at your home, school or the city in the same way.

Music: Instruments and Ensemble

  • Eddie Marshall
  • Anthony Michael Peterson
  • Tuesdays/Thursdays

Ever wanted to play an instrument and be in a band? In this class you will learn what it takes to create the rhythm section of a band: piano (electric keyboard), bass, guitar, and drums. For the first part of the session, students will learn the basic techniques required to play each of the four instruments. Then, everyone will choose one instrument to focus on to further develop particular skills. The band is the end result: an ensemble of musicians playing together - both favorite songs and original melodies. This class is open to all skill levels and instruments are provided.
