Architecture and Public Art: The Excelsior Arts Plan
Are you interested in architecture? Do you like building things? Do you want to have the power to make decisions about the space around you? In this class we will be making important decisions about public art in the Excelsior neighborhood. We will be designing and making art for the whole neighborhood to enjoy. For many of the students, this class can also lead to a paid summer internship! We will be showing our work at our final exhibition on June 5th. Black & White Photography
With a 35mm camera in hand and professional darkroom to use, your stories are revealed! Depending on your skill level, you will be coming on Tuesdays and Saturdays if you are at an advanced level and Thursdays and Saturdays if you are just starting to learn about photography. In this class you will learn to use 35mm film cameras to take meaningful and memorable photos. All students will come together in the professional darkroom to print their photos. Our final project will be exhibited on June 5th. |
Spoken Word/ Poetry
Be more than you think you are. In this poetry/Hip Hop workshop we will study and practice traditional poetry forms to develop control over craft and explore ways to write moving monologues and slinky third-person narratives. The class will culminate in a performance at our final exhibition on June 5th.
Dance: Bhangra and West African
From Jay-Z to Missy Elliot, you can hear traces of Bhangra music in hip-hop, jungle, and house music. West African dance is one of the many foundations of hip hop dance in the United States. Together they make a fresh and live dance class. If you like to dance and sweat, then this class is for you. (Or if you need P.E. credits at school!) The class will culminate in a performance at our final exhibition on June 5th.

This class will explore different methods of printmaking using many types of materials. We will also be working with stencils and spray paint. What we make in the class will be exhibited during the Mission Ave. Art Walk on June 5th.
Percussion Ensemble: Drumming
Have you ever wanted to learn how to play the drums? This class is an introduction to learning how to play in a percussion ensemble. Students will learn to listen, analyze and play many different rhythms. You will learn how to play the beat of some of your favorite hip hop songs as well as learn how to play rhythms from around the world. Students will work together to play in front of an audience in our final performance on June 5th.
