Artology:
Artist as Inventor

  • Marijke Jorritsma
  • Tuesday/Thursday

Calling all artists, tinkerers, backyard biologists, inventors, weekend roboticists, wanna-be mad scientists, creators of impossible ideas and positively thought provoking contraptions! Artology is an art class for those interested in the creative application of the biological, technological, geographical, and physical sciences. Through daily art experiments we will be examining what kinds of ideas and tools science and technology can offer the contemporary art maker. No previous experience with art, science or technology required!

The Booth:
Beats & Lyrics

  • Unity Lewis
  • Ben Miller-Rios
  • Tuesday/Thursday

Calling all dj's rappers, beat makers, poets and lyricists to perform and record! Students in The Booth class will form a collective of musicians who represent the next generation of recording artists. This class aims to sharpen the students' beat making skills, songwriting craft, music/audio production experience, and performance skills. Together we will create a body of work based on our personal experiences and express our diverse cultures, our communities, and our styles through our music. We will perform our original songs live at the Out of Site Celebration, where we will be releasing our professional-quality CD.

Architecture

  • Raffaella Falchi
  • Tuesdays/Thursdays

What if you could design your home, a float in a parade, a restaurant or a movie theater? What would be important to you? What would your design look like? Architects shape our world, and in this class you will learn the questions and ideas they consider, what inspires them and the skills and tools they use to create the buildings and spaces we enjoy. We will be visiting galleries and architects offices for inspiration and fact-finding and then returning to the studio for drawing and model building. In this class you will experience hands-on building. After this class, you will never look at your home, school or the city in the same way.

Design:
Fabric + Print

  • Geraldine Lozano
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

From pimping your wardrobe to activating people with your revolutionary poster designs - this class covers all the bases. We will be exploring social activism through design applications of logos, posters, wearable art, stencils and scrolls. The class will also be an introduction to fiber media through manipulated processes of dyeing, stitching, silk-screen printing, monoprinting and stenciling. Study historical and contemporary approaches to both relief and 3-dimensional fiber construction and design in this exciting new Out of Site class!

Black & White Photography

  • Kija Lucas
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

Photography changes the way the world works. With a combination of technical skills and artistic vision this power is in your hands. (Plus, we lend you a 35mm camera to use!) In this class you will sharpen your camera and darkroom skills and learn about the critical issues that photographers consider when making fine art prints. One of your assignments will be to photograph someone who has had a great impact on your life. It's your chance to capture and CREATE history - both personal and public. This class includes mandatory field trips to the professional darkroom on four Saturday afternoons: 3-7pm on 2/9, 2/23, 3/8, and 3/15.

Dance:
Bhangra Hip Hop

  • Joti Singh
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

From Jay-Z to Missy Elliot, much of today's popular hip hop has an Indian flavor. If you like to dance and sweat, then this class is for you. (Or if you need P.E. credits at school!) You will learn how traditional Punjabi moves are being remixed with hip hop choreography to create a high energy and really fun dance form that is everywhere these days - clubs, dance competitions, and professional stages. The class will get to perform at the Out of Site final celebration.
