Center Left Poetry

  • Myron Michael
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

Be more than you think you are. In this persona poetry workshop we will study and practice traditional poetry forms such as sonnets, haikus, and ghazals to develop control over craft and explore ways to write moving monologues and slinky third-person narratives in the voice of subjects photographed in portraits. With the theme Memory: signs and signals as our inspiration, we will collaborate with the photography class to create a book of our poetry and their images.

Bhangra and West African Dance

  • Joti Singh
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

From Jay-Z to Missy Elliot, you can hear traces of Bhangra music in hip-hop, jungle, and house music.  West African dance is one of the many foundations of hip hop dance in the United States.  Together they make a fresh and live dance class.  If you like to dance and sweat, then this class is for you. (Or if you need P.E. credits at school!) You will learn how traditional Punjabi moves are being remixed with hip hop choreography to create a new dance form. You will also learn the connections between traditional West African dance and the moves you see on videos on BET and MTV.  The class will culminate in a performance at the Out of Site Final Celebration.

Improvisational Theater

  • Leah Greenberg
  • Kimberly MacLean
  • Mondays/Wednesdays

Want to be a theater jock? This is six weeks of hardcore training in the art of making things up on the spot. Though the pros make it look easy on Whose Line is It Anyway and Saturday Night Live, improv actually takes lots of work and skill. Expect to get sore muscles. (not really) Expect to meet your new best friend. (perhaps) Expect to have tons of fun. (most certainly) At the end of the session we will test our might at the first ever Out of Site Theatersports Competition.

Black & White Photography

  • Kira Shemano
  • Maggie Preston
  • Tuesdays/Thursdays
*Students have the option of continuing in this class through spring session March 16-May 27

In this all-levels class you will learn to use 35mm film cameras to take meaningful and memorable photos.  We will spend time (four Saturday afternoons) in the darkroom making BW prints from your negatives. Plus, you will get the opportunity to experiment with polaroid film and polaroid transfers. With the theme Memory: signs and symbols as our guide, our final project will be collaborating with the poetry class to make a book of our photographs and their poetry.

Architecture and Design

  • Raffealla Falchi
  • Marijke Jorritsma
  • Tuesdays/Thursdays
*Students have the option of continuing in this class through spring session March 16-May 27

What if you could design your home, a float in a parade, a restaurant or a movie theater? What would be important to you? What would your design look like? Architects shape our world, and in this class you will learn the questions and ideas they consider, what inspires them and the skills and tools they use to create the buildings and spaces we enjoy. We will be visiting galleries and architects offices for inspiration and fact-finding and then returning to the studio for drawing and model building. In this class you will experience hands-on building. After this class, you will never look at your home, school or the city in the same way.

Afro-Brazilian Percussion Ensemble

  • Alfie Macias
  • Tuesdays/Thursdays
*Students have the option of continuing in this class through spring session March 16-May 27

Have you ever been to Carnaval in San Francisco? The drummers that roll deep in the parade through the streets of the Mission are part of a group called a bateria (Portugeuse for drums). Baterias are an important part of Samba schools in Brazil. They have been formed by youth and adults alike throughout Latin America. Come and learn about these drum rhythms from Brazil that have inspired music all over the world. Join an ensemble and learn how to perform as a group. You will gain important skills in playing music, performing, and creating your own rhythms.
