Hear hear! This summer at Out of Site we are holding our first-ever paid photography internship for SF public high school students. The program will consist of an intense, in-depth introduction into many different aspects of photography. Chemical processes, digital, commercial and fine art photography will all be explored (along with career development skill building), in this month-long, five-days-a-week program.

As some of you may know, we’ve always been a film & darkroom photo program, so now is the time to bring digital photography into the mix at Out of Site! And we are seeking donations of DSLR cameras. If you’ve recently upgraded your equipment, please consider donating your old DSLR (we aren’t picky!). It’s an opportunity to support the budding photographers at Out of Site, and get a tax write-off.

Please contact Adora at adora@outofsite-sf.org or call (415) 574-8137 if you have a camera to donate.

Maggie Preston (Black & White Photo Instructor) and Sofia Airaghi (Teaching Assistant) have been sorting through our massive archive of photographic ephemera and compiling selected works into a professional quality photo book, bringing to life the students’ voices and the transformative power of photography. The work will be showcased in a professional, everlasting medium, contrasting with customary fleeting exhibitions that last only a few hours.

We’re looking to raise $5,000 to get this project off the ground and would love your support. Funding will go toward the production & publication of the book and enable us to give it to our current photography students for free and to our other students and alumni at a low cost. We also want to carry it at local bookstores to fulfill our goal of keeping Out of Site in the public eye as well as use it as a fundraising tool. Proceeds from the sale of the book will go towards supporting the photography program at Out of Site. And there are lots of great rewards for pledging!

To donate and learn more, visit our indiegogo page.

Congratulations to our Out of Site Printmakers on the opening of their exhibition Fantasies & Illusions at Mamá Art Café.

Marcel Howard

The exhibition showcases some of the projects undertaken by the Printmaking class this spring. Students in this class came from high schools all over San Francisco and with varying levels of experience in the arts. For many of these students, this was their first printmaking class; and in a matter of only a few weeks, they were able to gain skills in stenciling, single and multi-color silkscreening and linoleum block printing.

In the printshop, these young artists carried out numerous independent projects while also learning how to work collaboratively. Throughout the session, we were guided by three key Understanding Goals:

1. How can I translate my imagery and text into multiples?

2. How does the creative process affect me (how I make/see/think)?

3. How does the creative work affect others? Who is my audience?

Evidenced in the exhibitions are some of process materials, self-guided projects and collaborative works. The 8.5 x 11 framed prints circling the room are each student’s interpretation of their common theme of “Fantasies & Illusions”. Students printed these works in editions of 20 and shared the collection with each other through a portfolio exchange.

Framed prints are available for purchase for $40. 100% of these proceeds will go directly to these young artists.

Portfolio boxes with a complete set of these prints are available for $150. 100% of these proceeds will go directly towards supporting Out of Site.

The exhibition runs May 12 – June 3, 2011
Opening Reception on Thursday, May 19, 2011, 7:00-8:30PM
The exhibition is supported by Mamá Art Café’s New Eden Projects.
Mamá Art Café is located at 4754 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA.

Our final event was part of the Ocean Avenue Arts Walk, with performers, merchants and artists welcoming community members all down Ocean Avenue. Our space at the old Ingleside Library showcased work from local young artists. We saw work from our own Out of Site visual arts classes – Mural Painting, Printmaking, Black & White Photography and Architecture; and were enthralled by some knock out performances from our Percussion & Music Production and Acting classes. We were also joined by young artists from the OMI/E Beacon, the Excelsior Community Center, and the Mission YMCA Top Chef program.

We are so proud of the great work all of our students, faculty and staff have done this past session. We were especially happy that night to give some special recognition to all of our graduating seniors as they get ready to enter college in the fall; and to inaugurate our new Out of Site Awards:

The Out of Site Alumni Award was granted to Kathy Canton. Kathy has been with Out of Site as a student, a teaching assistant, a Youth Advisory Board member and now as a co-teacher for the Black & White Photography class. A graduate of California College for the Arts, Kathy also works for the Rock Paper Scissors Collective in Oakland.

The Out of Site Intern Award was granted to Claudia Gara. As a student at Out of Site, Claudia’s creativity, positivity and skills at working with others made her a perfect choice for later working as a teaching assistant and as an Administrative Intern with us in the office this past year. Claudia could be depended on for any project or task we were working on, and her smile and optimism will be missed in the office this year as she continues her studies at City College.

The Out of Site Senior Award was granted to Christian Duarte. Christian has been a part of Out of Site for several year, taking just about every class we have offered, often taking two each session. Chrisitan has been indispensable as a teaching assistant, a Youth Advisory Board member, and now as an Intern with us this summer. Christian has also been involved with the SF Mime Troupe and is a talented actor, musician and leader. We’re glad to know Christian will still be close by to us as he enters City College in the fall.

A special thanks goes out to the folks at the Filipino Cultural Center for providing our sound system for the night; and to all of our local merchants and family members who brought in food to share for the night.
