Dear Friends,

As the founder and executive director of the Out of Site Youth Arts Center, I have worked with many of you for a long time, and together, we have had a profound and positive impact on the lives of thousands of teenagers in San Francisco. As our tag line says, “Art inspires Action!” and our work has been about arts education, but also much more. Out of Site is known as an organization that puts youth and the arts at the forefront of community change and development.

After almost 13 years at the helm of Out of Site, it is with pride and humility that I have decided to step down and seek my next big adventure. It’s exciting and emotional, as you can imagine. Out of Site opened its doors in June 2000, when my co-founder, Jennifer Stuart, and I, with a bit of seed funding and a powerful vision, taught a summer arts program for 15 public high school students at SOMArts. Now, twelve and a half years later, thousands of youth have been part of the fun and rigorous Out of Site community, and have gone onto college and careers with greater self-confidence, curiosity and critical skills. Hundreds of professional artists have shared their expertise and passion with our youth, as mentors, teachers and friends. Our programs have been enriched by our collaborations with arts and non-arts organizations, allowing us to deepen our programming and become an important catalyst for change in the neighborhood and city.

It’s been quite a journey! As a founder, I couldn’t be more inspired and humbled by the power of the vision and the quality of our programs. With a strong board, staff, faculty and youth leadership, Out of Site is ready for its own next adventure and a new leader to guide its exciting journey forward.

Thank you for being part of our work and investing in San Francisco youth!

With great thanks to you all,

Beth Rubenstein

Beginning in July, it will be focusing on the Excelsior, and Beth will have the opportunity to take on a leading role in community development in the neighborhood. The Koshland Award is deigned to connect local neighborhood leaders with the hope of encouraging collaboration on important community issues and projects. In particular, the award is given to “grassroots risk takers-those social innovators of bold spirit who accept the most stubborn neighborhood problems as a personal challenge and who work collaboratively to overcome them.” In doing so, the Koshland Program hopes to enable cooperation among diverse community members, aiming to collectively tackle the most pressing social issues in the region. Beth is honored to have been selected and is excited to represent Out of Site in this unique capacity.

Hear hear! This summer at Out of Site we are holding our first-ever paid photography internship for SF public high school students. The program will consist of an intense, in-depth introduction into many different aspects of photography. Chemical processes, digital, commercial and fine art photography will all be explored (along with career development skill building), in this month-long, five-days-a-week program.

As some of you may know, we’ve always been a film & darkroom photo program, so now is the time to bring digital photography into the mix at Out of Site! And we are seeking donations of DSLR cameras. If you’ve recently upgraded your equipment, please consider donating your old DSLR (we aren’t picky!). It’s an opportunity to support the budding photographers at Out of Site, and get a tax write-off.

Please contact Adora at adora@outofsite-sf.org or call (415) 574-8137 if you have a camera to donate.

Maggie Preston (Black & White Photo Instructor) and Sofia Airaghi (Teaching Assistant) have been sorting through our massive archive of photographic ephemera and compiling selected works into a professional quality photo book, bringing to life the students’ voices and the transformative power of photography. The work will be showcased in a professional, everlasting medium, contrasting with customary fleeting exhibitions that last only a few hours.

We’re looking to raise $5,000 to get this project off the ground and would love your support. Funding will go toward the production & publication of the book and enable us to give it to our current photography students for free and to our other students and alumni at a low cost. We also want to carry it at local bookstores to fulfill our goal of keeping Out of Site in the public eye as well as use it as a fundraising tool. Proceeds from the sale of the book will go towards supporting the photography program at Out of Site. And there are lots of great rewards for pledging!

To donate and learn more, visit our indiegogo page.
