Out of Site offers free after school, weekend and summer programs in visual, literary and performing arts to public high school students in San Francisco. Located at the intersection of the Excelsior and OMI neighborhoods of San Francisco, Out of Site is an independent nonprofit that is located on the campus of Lick-Wilmerding High School, a private school. This partnership enables us to use state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and tools.
Fall / Spring
During the school-year, we offer a Fall and Spring Session. Each session is approximately 12-weeks long and classes meet twice a week, for 2 hours. We always offer a mix of visual and performing arts as well as architecture.
Students come from high schools all over San Francisco to our site on the campus of Lick-Wilmerding. Students also have the opportunity to visit other sites around San Francisco through fieldtrips, community days, our final arts showcase and exhibitions. Take a look at our galleries from previous sessions to see what we do.
At Out of Site, it’s important that youth have an active role in what we do and a voice in the decisions we make. Students who want to take on greater leadership at Out of Site can work as Teaching Assistants or serve on our Youth Advisory Board. Students in these positions are paid a stipend and gain great experience as they enter college or look for other jobs. For more info on these positions, check out our Youth Leadership page.
Summer
Out of Site offers two 4-week long programs during the summer. During the summer, programs meet Monday-Friday from 10AM – 3PM.
The paid Summer Internships offer high school students a chance to experience what it’s like to work on a design team. Working with a group of other students, they take on a real-world project and receive a stipend. Students in the Architecture & Public Art internship recently created a life-size model of a parklet which they are proposing to install in the Excelsior neighborhood. The Video Production/Web Development team created a web site to support the arts in District 11. You can see what they’ve worked on at www.d11arts.org. While working as interns, students gain applicable arts and design skills as well as experience in working on a team, talking to community members, meeting deadlines and problem-solving.
The Rising 9th Graders program is a program run in collaboration with the OMI/E Beacon particularly for students getting ready to enter high school in the fall. While at Out of Site, they rotate through four different classes to try out different mediums. such as Printmaking, Acting, Percussion/Music Production and Black & White Photography. Every Friday students go on a Fieldtrip, and the program culminates with a final event & celebration.
