Youth Advisory Board

The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) plays a key role at Out of Site, keeping us true to our mission to provide arts classes and opportunities to youth that are relevant and engaging. YAB helps keep Out of Site going on a day-to-day basis while providing valuable input on important decisions such as which instructors we hire and what classes we offer.

The Out of Site Youth Advisory Board is comprised of 8-10 high school students who are enrolled in Out of Site classes and are interested in helping Out of Site while further developing their leadership skills. Members meet monthly and their responsibilities include participating in the hiring of new faculty, assisting in the planning and facilitating of Out of Site events, acting as Out of Site representatives for recruitment and advocacy, and giving input on what classes we offer. Members are paid a stipend for each 6-month term on the YAB.

She has taken printmaking at Out of Site more times than she can count, and was the teaching assistant for several sessions. However, now she is exploring her interest in photography. She has been on the Youth Advisory Board for more than a year and is also an intern at the Contemporary Jewish Museum. In addition, she is involved with BBYO (a Jewish youth group) and an AP Art History class at the de Young Museum. She enjoys reading, cooking and tap dancing.

In his free time, Harry enjoys playing soccer, running track, rock-climbing and playing the drums.

Nick Held

Nick started going to Out of Site classes around the end of his 9th grade year. He was motivated to go because a lot of his friends who went to his school, Metropolitan Arts & Tech were taking the classes. His mom found out he could get school credit for it so she wanted him to do it as well. Architecture was the first class he took and he really enjoyed the class. It was interesting, had a lot of tools, and the location and food was really good. After Architecture, he saw all the other classes he could take and wanted to take but couldn’t take at school. He’s going into his senior year of high school and since the end of 9th grade has been taking Out of Site classes and worked for YAB.

Jessica Lavelle

Jessica Lavelle is a student at City Arts and Technology High School and has been taking classes at Out of Site ever since her freshman year. She has taken almost every class that Out of Site has to offer and hopes to continue to be involved with Out of Site for as long as she possibly can. Jessica also enjoys the performing arts and hopes to become a professional performer or a performing arts teacher someday in the future.

Nguyet (Mimi) Duong

Mimi is fifteen years old and a student at Balboa High School. Mimi has taken three sessions of Architecture and a Carnaval Build & Design class at Out of Site. She has also participated in two paid summer Architecture internships. She also stays busy with volunteering with the Excelsior Action Group and working on her school newspaper. Mimi also loves to eat. Food is her life – literally! Almost every time you see her, she will have some sort of food in her mouth, in her hand or in a bag. So don’t be surprised!

Maggie Lei

Maggie is a graduating high school student from Lowell, going to CCA this fall. She will also be attending the California State Summer School for the Arts, for which she was awarded a scholarship. She’s taken Out of Site classes the entirety of her senior year, and has been a part of YAB for the last semester. Both semesters, she has taken screen-printing, always attempting to print her drawings on t-shirts and missing the mark slightly. At least her posters look decent!

Maggie is pretty much “that guy”. That guy, that nerdy guy that reads geeky superhero comics. She plans to turn her nerdy obsessions into a job, though. There’s gotta be a market for cartoons about chainsaw massacres and spandex pants!
